Valhalla Renaissance Faire Celebrates 23rd Anniversary At South Lake Tahoe

rs from foreign lands and juggling jesters, winsome wenches, lords and ladies, knight of horseback, squires and simpletons. They aren't just the stuff of fairy tales. They'll gather May 30th and 31st and June 5-6-7 for South Lake Tahoe's favorite festival, the 23rd annual Valhalla Renaissance Faire. Be a part of history and come in costume, or come as you are and immerse yourself in games, theater and splendid Renaissance marketplace.

Drawing more then 8,000 visitors, the Valhalla Renaissance Faire is a unique entertainment experience and an extraordinary outing for children. This unique festival includes real jousting sessions and full armored combat between knights, along with culinary delicacies, craft demonstrations, ancient music, dance and comedy. Patrons will participate in archery, javelin throws, and fencing. Activities for the children will include dancing, games, crafts, puppet shows and storytelling.

The Valhalla Renaissance Faire recreates a Renaissance village on festival weekends and includes a merchant marketplace with nearly 100 unique merchants and crafters.

First Weekend:

Scottish invasion! The first weekend is geared more toward younger audiences with tons of shows, dancing, theater plays, music and magic for your whole family. Inspire your children to learn about Shakespeare or the Renaissance by dressing up for the weekend. Enter Costume contests, stroll through a maze, play tons of games meet the Queen and Shakespeare's characters from his stories, learn to sword fight, dance in the streets, watch some awesome theatre, and get drenched too at court of St. Aidens!

Second Weekend:

Pirate and Barbarian Hordes invade the festivities on the second weekend. Let loose and have a jolly good time while you participate in Scavenger Hunts, costume contests, and a Talk Like a Pirate Competitions.

For some, the sport of jousting is a real-life passion and thrives outside of the movies and Renaissance fairs.

Lead by Charlie Andrews, the world champion of full contact heavy armor jousting, the "Knights of Mayhem," is dedicated to transforming this medieval sport from a staged act to a professional sports phenomenon that is sweeping the globe. For these "knights," jousting is no dinner show. Donning 130 pounds of steel armor, they mount 2,000-pound horses and charge at each other with solid hemlock lances at speeds up to 30-mph, while peering through a quarter-inch eye slot in their helmets.

When lance and knight collide, riders struggle to control their horses and absorb devastating impacts with potential for concussions, broken bones and far worse.

Charlie and his group have garnered acclaim recently as they were featured on the Knights of Mayhem reality show that aired on the National Geographic Channel. Experience in person what makes these guys such amazing athletes and personalities and join in the fun at the San Jose Renaissance faire.
